Overview of 177 East 78th Street

177 East 78 Street stands as a grand four-story townhouse characterized by its red brick façade and includes a finished basement as well as an elevator servicing the entire residence. Constructed around 1899, this elegant dwelling is situated adjacent to its counterpart, 175 East 78 Street.

Nestled on a picturesque tree-lined street, 177 East 78 Street was originally occupied in 1871 by Augustus T Chur, a hardware merchant who settled there after the Civil War. Following this, the affluent widow Mrs. Mary Sheehan resided in the single house for a considerable period until real estate firm Lowenfeld & Prager acquired both 177 and 175 East 78 Street in 1902.

Remarkably, these two homes have remained under unified ownership ever since. It's noteworthy that the renowned American author and Nobel Prize laureate, John Steinbeck, made these two buildings his residence from September 1946 until 1948, together with his wife.
