Riverfront is an eight story pre-war rental building in Lenox Hill, dating to 1915. It was originally constructed as the Junior League Hotel, later became the East River Hotel for Women, and was designed by Philip Ohm of the City and Suburban Homes Architectural Department. The building forms part of a larger City and Suburban Homes complex developed around efforts to improve low income housing conditions in New York.
The building was altered over time, including the addition of a floor, and retains rusticated columns at its entrance and rustication near the top of the façade. It has 12 apartments per floor, a 24 hour doorman, video security, a mail room, laundry facilities, a live-in superintendent, and a rooftop terrace. In the mid 1980s, developer Peter Kalikow acquired the full block and proposed replacing its buildings with four residential towers; civic opposition ultimately defeated the plan.
Apartment layouts range from alcove studios to larger residences with separate bedrooms. Apartments commonly have high ceilings, open concept arrangements, abundant natural light, generous closet space, and kitchens with stainless steel appliances, dishwashers, and microwave hoods. The building’s position along the FDR Drive and the East River is reflected in apartments with river views, while John Jay Park is directly across the street and Carl Schurz Park is close by. Riverfront is pet friendly, with no stated weight or breed restrictions.
