"The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission is considering creating a first-of-its-kind 'Skyscraper Historic District.' But it wouldn't be in Manhattan - it would be in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn," according to an article by Rich Calder in today's edition of The New York Post.

"Such a designation - pitched by the Brooklyn Heights Association and other preservation groups - would protect Brooklyn Borough Hall and 19 primarily high-rise commercial and government office buildings from overzealous developers," the article said.

"'We have skyscrapers in Downtown Brooklyn that rival Manhattan's,' Brooklyn Heights Association Executive Director Judy Stanton said. 'We want to make sure we don't lose them,'" the article said.

The district would run along Court Street, from Montague Street four blocks south to Livingston Street.

The predominantly late 19th Century and early 20th Century buildings there also include the 35-story Montague-Court Building at 16 Court Street and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Building at 75 Livingston Street.

The commission will host a public hearing December 14 on the proposal.

The proposed district abuts the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, which became New York's first neighborhood granted historic district protection in 1965.
