Columbia University continues to embark on its significant expansion of the Manhattanville campus, located just a few blocks northwest of its main Morningside Heights campus. Several impressive buildings have already been unveiled on this new campus, including The Jerome L. Greene Science Center, The Lenfest Center for the Arts, and, most recently, the Henry R. Kravis Building and the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Business Innovation at Columbia Business School.
The university has also topped out on one of the most prominent additions to the uptown skyline—a 34-story tower rising at 600 West 125th Street and the southwest corner of Broadway. Set to open in 2024, this tower will accommodate 142 apartments for graduate students and faculty. Select faculty apartments will offer private terraces, and residents will have access to amenities such as a 150-space bike room, storage facilities, a fitness center, and lounges on the second and sixth floors, complete with terraces.

Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with CetraRuddy as the executive architect, the tower incorporates design and sustainability principles akin to those observed in the neighboring Manhattanville campus. It boasts a high-performance facade, vegetated roofs, stormwater retention, optimized equipment efficiency, and an enhanced Clean Construction program, all contributing to its pursuit of LEED Gold certification.
The tower's exterior features vertical, multi-pane rows of operable and non-operable windows, adding an intriguing quality to its scale. The tower is set back from Broadway in three substantial setbacks and will be crowned by industrial-like flues, paying homage to the area's once-thriving manufacturing history.

Notably, the project stands adjacent to the arched elevated subway station of the 1 line, which has been seismically engineered to account for the nearby 125th Street/Manhattanville Fault. This fault has been associated with historical seismic activity, including an earthquake in 1737, as well as smaller events in 1981 and 2001. Also of note, the tower replaces a well-known McDonald’s drive-through, which is expected to return within the new building, occupying 5,000 square feet on the ground floor, albeit without drive-through service.
