In response to the evolving but not fading work-from-home trend, a new condominium development in Kips Bay is addressing the hybrid work lifestyle by providing "home office hot spots" in each of its 59 residences. Named Hendrix House, the project is led by the development firm New Empire Corp., headed by CEO Bentley Zhao and fresh off the recent success of 208 Delancey Street on the Lower East Side. Construction began in May 2023, and the structure has recently surpassed street level.

Designed by DXA Studio, the development emphasizes elegant, bold, and minimalistic interiors tailored for residents seeking clean lines and a relaxed home environment. Mr. Zhao notes that the design, initiated during the pandemic, incorporates a home office hot spot in every unit, anticipating the shift towards remote work (h/t Multi-Housing News). This also allows for the option of a reading nook, meditation spot, home gym, nursery, or other bonus room for those who cannot work from home or choose not to. Shared amenities are set to include an outdoor garden, a communal coworking space, and a fitness center with a steam room and sauna.
Situated at 429 Second Avenue, at the southwest corner of East 25th Street, the site is strategically positioned near the proposed Science Park and Research Campus (SPARC) Kips Bay, a $1.6 billion life sciences hub envisioned by the city and state government. It is also close to Baruch College, Madison Square Park, and acclaimed Gramercy restaurants.
While Kips Bay has been traditionally known for medical institutions on First Avenue and its bar scene on Third Avenue, the area is gaining more attention amid the growing scarcity of development sites in adjacent neighborhoods. Last year, Borough President Mark Levine published a report envisioning rezoning the west side of Second Avenue between East 23rd and East 34th streets, potentially adding up to 942 residential units.
