Tower 58, 58 West 58th Street: Review and Ratings

between Fifth Avenue & Sixth Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 58 West 58th Street by Carter Horsley

This large, mid-block, 31-story, apartment tower at 58 West 58th Street is known as Tower 58 and has large plazas on 58th and 57th Streets.

It was erected in 1969 by Loew’s Theaters and converted to a condominium in 1984.

It was designed by Samuel Paul.

It originally had about 185 apartments and now has 167 apartments.

Bottom Line

Convenient to shopping and transportation, this mid-block and through-block tower has two large plazas and a driveway.  It is very close to the Plaza Hotel, the Park Lane Hotel and Bergdorf Goodman, and many apartments have impressive views of Central Park.

Description

The beige-brick building has many balconies that are rather unusual as their sides are concave curves, a nice touch and they are masonry except for a few feet near the building where the masonry gives way to railings, a rather esoteric design touch that slightly enlivens the façade.

The 57th Street plaza is given over to retail and the building's main entrance on 58th Street has its own, landscaped driveway and canopied entrance. Neither plaza contributes significantly to the urban streetscape, but zoning regulations at the time of its construction permitted the developer to erect a taller building, and many apartments therefore have impressive views of Central Park one block to the north.

Amenities

The building has a garage, a laundry, a bicycle room, storage, a roof deck and a live-in superintendent as well as a doorman.

It is pet-friendly.

Apartments

Apartments have 9-foot ceilings.

Apartment 12E is a two-bedroom unit with 14-foot-wide entry foyer that leads to a 23-foot-long living room with a balcony and a 12-foot-long dining alcove next to the 9-foot-long enclosed kitchen.

Apartment 10C is a two-bedroom unit that has a 24-foot-long entrance gallery that leads to a foyer and a 10-foot-long enclosed kitchen and 27-foot-long living room with an angled five-sided balcony and a 13-foot-long dining room.

Apartment 19A is a one-bedroom unit with an 8-foot-wide entry foyer that leads to a 20-foot-long living room with a balcony and an 11-foot-long dining area next to an enclosed kitchen.

Apartment 28C is a two-bedroom unit with an 18-foot-long entry foyer that leads to a 25-foot-long living room and an 11-foot-long dining room with an 11-foot-wide balcony and a 9-foot-long enclosed kitchen.

The block is pretty impressive as it is also shared by the Plaza and Park Lane Hotels and the sleek, elegant, sloping skyscraper at 9 West 57th Street whose broad plaza on 58th Street has a great and large Picasso bronze sculpture.
