Coliseum Plaza, 243 West End Avenue: Review and Ratings

between West 71st Street & West 72nd Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 243 West End Avenue by Carter Horsley

This substantial structure is typical of the high quality of many apartment houses on West End Avenue, one of the city's finest most distinguished residential streets. The 17-story, 185-unit building was erected in 1924 and converted to a cooperative in 1989. With its attractive decorative terracotta trim and pre-war construction quality, this building, which has some arched windows and decorative balconies, is understated but elegant. Just two blocks from the southern entrance to Riverside Park to the west and an express subway station to the east, this building has a superb Upper West Side location. It is a few blocks north of the Lincoln Center District and just to the east of the north end of the huge new luxury apartment complex rising at Riverside South facing the Hudson River. Riverside South will undoubtedly add to the area's congestion, but will also strenghten its ongoing gentrification.
