Charlton House, 2 Charlton Street: Review and Ratings

between Sixth Avenue & Varick Street View Full Building Profile

Review of 2 Charlton Street by Carter Horsley

This attractive, red-brick, 17-story apartment building was erected in 1966 and converted to a cooperative in 1981. It has 176 apartments.

When this was erected, this neighborhood was not in its prime. The renaissance of the SoHo area nearby had not yet taken hold to the east and the commercial loft and industrial buildings to the west were struggling with the city's declining manufacturing base.

This street and King Street, one block away, have many attractive brownstones that fortunately survived the commercial redevelopment of this area in the early part of the 20th Century.

Times have changed, of course, and this building now has a prime location, close to two modern office buildings, a revitalized SoHo, a strong and vibrant Greenwich Village and Little Italy and the trendy upgrading of the TriBeCa area to the south.

This building has many excellent views and there is good public transportation.

Shopping and restaurants abound in the area and there is considerable traffic along the Avenue of the Americas.

The doorman building has some terraces but no balconies.
