The 19th Century Horace Greeley School in Greenpoint, Brooklyn has been converted into 13 residential condominiums. The conversion retained the central red-brick facade while adding glass-and-metal wings and a roof addition.
533 Leonard Street is a 13 unit condominium created from PS 59, the former Horace Greeley School, on Williamsburg’s border with Greenpoint. The Italianate school was built between 1886 and 1888 and later served the Polish Legion of American Veterans before its residential conversion was completed in 2017.
The five story conversion preserved the school’s central red brick façade and arched windows while adding setback glass and metal wings and a rooftop addition; the original pitched roof and stoop were removed. Philip Toscano is named as architect, and Largo Investments developed the project.
Nearly half of the residences are duplexes, including parlor and garden arrangements, and every apartment has private outdoor space. Double-height ceilings reach 17 feet in several homes, while oversized windows, exposed brick, original beams and radiant heated floors carry the contrast between the former school and its contemporary interiors. The two floor through penthouses have large private terraces.
The building has a rooftop terrace with Manhattan views, resident storage, bike storage, a package room, a virtual doorman and four parking spaces. McCarren Park is close by, between the surrounding Williamsburg and Greenpoint blocks.
