between Second Avenue & First Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 340 East 80th Street by Carter Horsley

This very large, light-red-brick building extends through the block and occupies all of the block's First Avenue frontage except for a small, three-story building at the 79th Street corner. Although a single structure, the building consists of two towers, each with their own addresses - 333 East 79th Street and 340 East 80th Street, their own doormen, their own mailboxes, their own laundry rooms, their own doormen and their own entrances. The 79th Street entrance is up a few steps under a large stainless-steel marquee and adjacent to a long dry moat along 79th Street that provides light to lower units. The lobby is quite bright and overlooks through large windows a landscaped courtyard and garden with a fountain as well as a long planted area along First Avenue. The building has another canopied entrance at 340 East 80th Street, where there is a ramp. Many of the the apartments have balconies and there is health club. An attracive food store is across 79th Street and many popular restaurants, such as Campagnola, are nearby on First and Second Avenues. A large supermarket is about one block away. Cross-town buses run on 79th Street and the nearest subway is at 77th Street and Lexington Avenue. A south-bound entrance to the FDR Drive is at the east end of 79th Street. Carl Schurz Park is not too far away to the north on East End Avenue. The 20-story building, which has children's play areas, was erected in 1961 and converted to a cooperative in 1982. It has 452 apartments. The 20-story building was erected in 1961 and converted to a cooperative in 1982. It has 452 apartments.
