Eton House, 345 East 81st Street: Review and Ratings

between First Avenue & York Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 345 East 81st Street by Carter Horsley

This 20-story building was erected in 1963 and converted to a cooperative in 1983. The building's many balconies are recessed and flush with the building line. The balconies are shared by more than one apartment, separated by partitions, but the visual effect gives the building a strong horizontal emphasis. The large, doorman building has 214 apartments and a garage. It is convenient to many restaurants and not far from some of the city's finest schools. While it is far from the subway, it is close to the 79th Street entrance to the FDR Drive and the 79th Street crosstown buses. Although the area still has many tenement structures, considerable new high-rise construction has occurred and continues to gentrify the area.
