Avalon Fort Greene - 343 Gold Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This handsome, 42-story tower is a full-service rental apartment building in a prime and central Brooklyn location with spectacular views.

Known as Avalon Fort Greene, it is convenient not only to Fort Greene Park but also to Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn and it is not far from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, one of the city s most important cultural venues, and a campus of Long Island University.

This building is at the center of a new high-rise cluster that has reshaped the Brooklyn skyline. It has been developed by AvalonBay Communities, which has also built major residential developments in the East Village, Lower East Side and on Cathedral Parkway in Manhattan and Long Island City in Queens. AvalonBay is also planning a 57 -story, 861-unit rental project known as Avalon Willoughby West on a site a few blocks from this development.

The building, which is at 343 Gold Street, has 631 apartments and has been designed by Perkins Eastman Architects. It is also known as 159-171 Myrtle Avenue, 104-130 Prince Street, and 207-211 Flatbush Avenue Extension.

The building has a 24-hour concierge service, garage with valet parking, a fitness center, and a residents’ lounge with billiards table, on-site Zipcars, WiFi access in common areas, and is pet friendly.

Apartments have washers and dryers and kitchens have granite countertops, contemporary cabinetry and Energy Star stainless steel appliances.

The building is convenient to public transportation and shopping and restaurants.

The building has an orange-brick-and-glass façade and a symmetrical massing that includes setbacks at either end of its slab form and many corner windows.

A March 8, 2009 article by Jeff Vandam in The New York Times noted that "snug in its corner between downtown Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Clinton Hill and the Atlantic Yards area, Fort Greene retains more than its share of stunningly intact brownstone blacks," adding that "the blocks that end at Fort Greene Park...often dominate best-block lists."
