If you have a long-term (30+ day) New York City stay planned, such as for a work gig or a semester of study, a hotel room can get impersonal and expensive very quickly. Moreso, renting a room for short stretches has become more difficult in the wake of the short-term rental crackdown. However, furnished apartments allow more transient residents to think bigger, spread out, and establish a homebase in the city for the duration of their stay.
While the bulk of furnished apartments take on a corporate, neutral, and often bland aesthetic, the large presence of high-net-worth individuals in the city—and the corresponding price points—suggests a clear, untapped opportunity for more inspired furnished residences.

In the sales market, furnished units remain relatively rare, but demand is growing. Busy New Yorkers may not have time to renovate or shop for furniture, which has led to rising interest in turnkey, fully furnished properties. This trend also parallels the increasing popularity of hotel-condo units.

Some startups are stepping in to fill that gap. The New York City-based venture Casameu aims to elevate the furnished rental experience with more individuality and higher-end furnishings, ideal for renters seeking a homier environment. Founded by two real estate veterans from Related Companies, Alyssa Shapiro and Chris Schmidt, the company will fully launch in the coming weeks and caters to international students, young professionals, pied-à-terre seekers, remote workers, and digital nomads.
Mr. Schmidt tells CityRealty that the company has started by leasing 15 units, mostly on Manhattan's west side, with plans to grow steadily. The first residents have signed leases to move in on May 15, and demand has already been strong. “Traditional furnished apartments often offer only the basics such as generic furniture, uncomfortable beds, and the sense that everything came straight out of a warehouse,” says Chris. “We’re taking a different approach. Each unit is designed to feel special, with premium finishes and custom touches. It’s about more than efficiency; it’s about experience and emotional connection.”
For Casameu, New York City is a unique market that welcomes experimentation and thoughtful design. Chris explains that every space is curated down to the details, often incorporating Danish and Latin American influences inspired by the founders' travels. "It’s not just about providing housing—it’s about offering a sanctuary and reshaping what furnished living can be.” The goal is to provide homes with “soul, style, and story.”

Each apartment blends vintage and contemporary pieces with collected accents, layered textures, and an inviting balance of masculine and feminine design. From custom floral arrangements to thoughtful lighting, every detail is considered. “We call it the collector’s home, sophisticated, warm, and designed to reflect a life well-lived,” says Chris.
