In many New York City buildings, it has become the norm to install a gas grill in the courtyard or roof deck to bring a taste (no pun intended) of suburbia to the big city at the height of barbecue season. However, some designers take it one step further by outfitting the space with outdoor kitchens offering prep areas, sinks, and/or mini-fridges. Still others have added bells and whistles like smokers, wine fridges, and other items that only the most diehard gourmands are likely to keep in their apartments.

Designer Lindy Lowney tells Architectural Digest that the difference between simple grill setups and outdoor kitchens is that "an outdoor kitchen is not only a natural extension of indoor living, but it also allows for hosting a larger gathering." That is certainly the case with these new developments' outdoor kitchens, as they are situated in the buildings' courtyard or roof terraces, allowing residents to entertain large groups and enjoy beautiful views. Fair warning–these could get crowded on especially nice days!
