2 West 12th Street CLOSE
The 11-story building was erected in 1920 and converted to a cooperative in 1976. It has only 23 apartments.
It is on one of the prettiest blocks in the city, just down the street from the beautiful First Presbyterian Church, designed in 1846 by Joseph C. Wells with its very large gardens, to the east and from the New School for Social Research to the west.
"This dark crusty facade, lyrically set off by delicate ironwork balconies, is one of many structures in the city wrongfully attributed to McKim, Mead & White. Buildings of great character, like this one, were designed by many distinguished firms," observed Elliot Willensky and Norval White in their marvelous book, "The A.I.A. Guide to New York City, Third Edition," (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988).
This building was built in 1895 and designed by J. B. Snook & Sons, the same architectural firm that designed the cupolaed Grand Central Depot on 42nd Street in 1871 that was eventually replaced by Grand Central Terminal.
The developer was George A. Hearn, whose department store was nearby on West 14th Street before it moved uptown to 34th Street and eventually closed.
The building, which is in the heart of Greenwich Village, just off elegant Lower Fifth Avenue, is convenient to many supermarkets and gourmet food stores and public transportation as well as many restaurants.
