Notable NYC Neighbors

DECEMBER 13, 2012

From downtown condos to uptown classics, stars of the art, literary and music worlds set the bar high for NYC real estate.

It speaks volumes for the Midtown West neighborhood of Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen that Perfect Storm author Sebastian Junger just sold his condo there (it was bought by the building’s condo board) for $1.2 million. Junger bought his apartment for $750k in 2003. The once-gritty neighborhood is packed with history, though it is now home to luxury addresses like the soaring, 600-plus-foot Orion at 350 West 42nd Street (NYO).

Gallerist Barbara Gladstone recently sold her 16th floor condo in the glass-walled Richard Meier-designed condo at 165 Charles Street for $6.5 million. The building has been the home of a long list of celebrities including Natalie Portman, Calvin Klein, Martha Stewart and Hugh Jackman (NYO).

Art-loving beer heiress Daphne Guinness has found a buyer for her sprawling, high-profile (it was recently featured in Architectural Digest) home in the Stanhope at 995 Fifth Avenue. The 4,118-square-foot corner apartment with views of the Met and Central Park sold for $11.3 million, well below the $14m ask (CurbedNY).

Musician/DJ and all-around ball of creative energy Moby recently sold his NoHo penthouse at 7 Bond Street for $5.8 million after a million-dollar renovation transformed the space, which features a 37-foot great room with 19-foot ceilings (CurbedNY).

Big Tickets

Bruce Barnes, head of the Dakota co-op board, recently sold his 3-bedroom apartment in the iconic residence at 1 West 72nd Street. Barnes listed the 3-bedroom apartment with lovingly-restored 19th-century details, several fireplaces, central air and a chef’s kitchen for $29.6 million in April (CurbedNY).
