The local community had created a special zoning district to protect the street from redevelopment when Gimbel’s began building a large store on the northeast corner of 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. That store subsequently was rebuilt into a huge apartment building and now hardly anything remains of the old Yorkville community’s architectural heritage.
This very large, 25-story apartment building was designed by Davis Brody Bond and has 240 apartments.
It has a wood-paneled lobby, a fitness center, a concierge and a roof deck.
It is convenient to the express subway station at Lexington Avenue and many restaurants and stores.
In 2009, the ambiance of West 86th Street was considerably upgraded with the completion of two luxury apartment buildings, the Brompton on the southeast corner at Third Avenue and the Lucida on the southeast corner at Lexington Avenue.
