Gatsby House,
155 West 71st Street

Condo located in Upper West Side, between Columbus Avenue & Broadway

This 6-story, mid-block apartment building at 155 East 71st Street was erected in 1940 and has 55 condominium apartments. It is called The Gatsby House, but its fire escapes do not recall the legendary architectural splendors of the type of house that F. Scott Fitzgerald's romantic hero of the North Shore of Long Island might have made one of his abodes.

Overview of Gatsby House at 155 West 71st Street

Gatsby House is a six story, 55 residence Art Deco condominium at 155 West 71st Street, completed in 1940. Its south side faces the Blessed Sacrament Church directly across the street, a 1917 Gothic building designed by Gustave Steinback that forms the principal outlook from many south facing rooms.

The pre-war plans center on large entrance foyers and sunken living rooms, often with high ceilings and broad south facing windows. Windowed kitchens, hardwood floors, deep closet storage and long halls recur, and several layouts use the foyer or hall as a separate dining or work area.

The building has a roof terrace and shared rear garden, as well as a bike room, laundry room and resident storage. A live-in superintendent accepts packages, and the condominium is pet friendly.

The Broadway corridor is around the corner, with Trader Joe's at Broadway and 72nd Street. The 72nd Street station, served by the 1, 2 and 3 trains, is one block north, while Lincoln Center is several blocks south and Central Park and Riverside Park lie to the east and west.

Broker & Buyer Comments

This "gracious" pre-war Art Deco condo offers "classic Upper West Side living" in a "prime location" steps from Lincoln Center. The "mid-sized" building features a "well-appointed" amenity package including a roof deck, bike storage, and basement laundry, while the "elegant" lobby maintains its original architectural character. "Incredibly convenient" to the 1,2,3 trains and "superior shopping" at Fairway and Citarella, this "work-friendly" building offers "reasonable" maintenance fees and benefits from a live-in super's attention.
