161 East 79th Street: Review and Ratings

between Lexington Avenue & Third Avenue View Full Building Profile

Review of 161 East 79th Street by Carter Horsley

This pleasant, 12-story apartment house was erected in 1916 and converted to a cooperative in 1962. It has 26 apartments.

The red-brick, mid-block building has large planters on the second and third floors, a continuous balcony on the fourth floor and a cornice. The doorman building has a canopied, step-up entrance that leads to a small, step-up lobby. It has discrete air-conditioners and inconsistent fenestration.

The building has an exposed rooftop watertank, no garage and no health club.

The neighborhood is one of the most elegant on the Upper East Side. There are numerous schools and religious and cultural institutions nearby. Public transportation is excellent as is neighborhood shopping.
