The Englewood is a 12 story, 82 unit pre-war cooperative built in 1928 at 140 East 81st Street, on the Lexington Avenue corner. The building culminates in a penthouse with three open exposures and a landscaped terrace. Its white brick façade rises from a two story painted limestone base, with band courses, decorative balconies, sidewalk landscaping and a lantern flanked entrance.
Many homes retain ceilings of about nine feet, often with beams, as well as herringbone oak floors, moldings and original doors. Layouts frequently open through entry foyers to large living rooms, while corner bedrooms and windowed kitchens bring light from multiple exposures; upper floors look over townhouse gardens or toward broader city views. A classic six in the B line was reworked by architect Steven Kratchman around an oversized west facing great room.
The building has a full time doorman, a live-in resident manager, fitness room, courtyard garden, laundry room, bicycle room and resident storage. The co-op permits pied-à-terre ownership, pets, in-unit washer dryers and subletting, subject to board rules.
Central Park is three avenues west, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art just inside the park at 82nd Street. Lenox Hill Hospital is four blocks south on Lexington Avenue, and the surrounding East 81st Street blocks are lined with townhouses and brownstone gardens.
