According to a new report, America’s first-quarter GDP has contracted for the first time in six years and fallen at a 4.8% annualized rate. This was the worst drop since the fourth quarter of 2008, or the height of the Great Recession. Economists caution that "the full economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be quantified," but between the closing of non-essential businesses, stay-at-home orders, and large-scale layoffs and furloughs, more people are saving their money than spending. One economist predicts that the economy is not expected to bounce back until late 2022.

In the meantime, a total of 50 condos, co-ops, and townhouses throughout the five boroughs have had their prices reduced in the past seven days. Just as the coronavirus does not discriminate, neither does the price cuts - small studios and sprawling mansions alike have experienced them. The fears may have hit the rental market as well, with one striking example to be found at 432 Park Avenue: Shortly after New York went on lockdown, a high-floor home in the city's tallest finished residential building went on the market as a fully furnished rental asking an eye-watering $100,000/month. But it seems the unit’s prestigious address, corner location, and AD100 design pedigree have yet to entice a renter in this environment; the price has fallen 55 percent to $45,000/month over the past week. The sale of the 59th-floor sky palace closed last year for $16,939,575. The buyer is listed as the LLC, Hampstead Properties, Inc.
