238 East 4th Street is a modern seven story condominium in the East Village, completed in 2009 with two residences. The building is organized as a four story home below and a duplex penthouse above, with the two apartments offering the possibility of a combined residence of approximately 11,000 square feet. A private garage is incorporated into the lower home, while the property also has substantial private outdoor space.
Developer Sue Hostetler retained the lower residence, and the upper duplex was acquired by Oscar Proust and Colleen Goujjane, owners of the Greenwich Village restaurant One if by Land, Two if by Sea. Bob and Courtney Novogratz designed the duplex interiors. Its structural features include a 31 foot living room with a fireplace and skylight, a 29 foot open kitchen and dining area, and a 58 foot private roof terrace with views toward the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building.
The mid block building has a plain white façade, dark wood ground floor doors, a glass and stainless steel balcony, and a setback top floor with a glass railing. Its residential features include on site parking, terraces and balconies, fireplaces, in-unit washer and dryers, radiant heat, security systems, and video intercoms. The building is located between Avenues A and B, amid the East Village's cafes, gardens, and low rise residential blocks.
