Carter Horsley
Review of 234 East 23rd Street by Carter Horsley

This very attractive, mid-block building at 234 East 23rd Street between Third and Second Avenues near Gramercy Park has a very dramatic, two-story high entrance and very handsome metal window frames and façade dividers.

The 20-story building has 57 condominium apartments.

The Naftali Group is the developer and Goldstein, Hill & West is the architect, which also designed The Seymour at 261 West 25th Street for the same developer.

Bottom Line

Very elegant entrance and lots of industrial-window styling near Gramercy Park and good public transportation.

Description

The building is distinguished by horizontal wooden louvers in its vestibule and its double-height and full-width, multi-paned lobby door and surround that is very, very impressive.

The lower two floors of its base are outlined in black metal girders that are very attractive.

The two corner terraces on the front façade have handsome glass railings.

Amenities

The building has a second-floor garden terrace, a roof deck with BBQ grill and an outdoor kitchen, a lounge, a library, a gym and a residents’ library with a billiards room.

Apartments

Apartments have solid oak flooring and kitchens have Bertazzoni, Miele and SubZero appliances, white quartzite countertops and silver travertine backsplashes and stainless steel shelving.

Some bathrooms have double-sink vanities with tall beveled mirrors and some have very attractive multi-paned half-screens and almost-full-eight multi-paned doors for the shower enclosure with black marble flooring.

Apartments C on the ninth through the 14th floors are three-bedroom units with a small entrance foyer leading to the 11-foot-wide dining area next to the 15-foot-long open kitchen with an island and the 17-foot-long living room.

Apartment 18B is a two-bedroom unit with a long entrance gallery that leads to a 16-foot-wide living room next to a 13-foot-wide dining room with an open kitchen and 12-foot-wide terrace.

Residence 17A is a two-bedroom unit with a 24-foot-long entrance gallery that leads to a 20-foot-long living room adjoining a 16-foot-long kitchen with an open kitchen.

Residences 7A and 8A are two-bedroom units with 11-foot-long entrance foyer that lead to a 12-foot-wide, open kitchens with islands next to 18-foot-long living room.

A one-bedroom unit on the second floor has a 17-foot-long living/dining room with an open kitchen.
