Scheffel Hall at 190 Third Avenue is a four-story, 5,980-square-foot landmark in Manhattan's Gramercy Park neighborhood. Built in 1894 and designated a landmark in 1997, this historic property is an enduring example of German-American Renaissance Revival architecture. Its design, inspired by the 17th-century Heidelberg Castle, pays homage to the German poet and novelist Viktor von Scheffel.
Originally a German restaurant and beer hall, Scheffel Hall has a storied past that reflects the cultural heritage of the neighborhood. The building retains a significant amount of air rights, which may be used in future developments to address housing needs in the area, while preserving the character of this historic gem.
