10 East 14th Street is a six story, seven unit condominium in a cast iron building erected in 1884, with the condominium dating to 2006. Commissioned by W. Jennings Demorest, the building occupied an important place in the transformation of 14th Street from a residential to a commercial thoroughfare. It was also associated with the women's suffrage movement, along with the Lunacy Reform League, the Anti Kidnapping Union, artists, and businesses involved in social reform.
The apartments retain the spatial character of cast iron construction, with high ceilings, exposed brick, oversized or floor to ceiling windows, gas fireplaces, and double paned glass. Full floor lofts are a recurring format, and layouts range from two and three bedroom homes with separate office or den space to a duplex with living areas on one level and bedrooms above. Private patios, balconies, and roof terraces appear among the building's outdoor spaces, including a penthouse organized around a glass conservatory and rooftop gardens.
Interiors commonly combine open living and dining areas with custom kitchens, substantial storage, central air and heat, hardwood or wide plank floors, and in unit washer and dryers. Kitchens are generally fitted with high end appliances, integrated dishwashers, wine storage, and wet bars, while bathrooms may include deep soaking tubs, separate showers, heated floors, and steam showers. The building also has video intercom and security systems, and pets are permitted.
The building sits between Fifth Avenue and University Place, just east of the New School, with Union Square Park and its transit hub at the opposite end of the block. Its Greenwich Village setting brings Union Square's restaurants, cafes, markets, and shops into close proximity, while Washington Square Park is a short distance south.
