The Oakman is a 15 story, 159 unit condominium at 160 First Street in Jersey City's Powerhouse Arts District, completed in 2016 by The Schuster Group and designed by Fogarty Finger. The building takes its name from John Oakman, who designed the 1907 H&M Powerhouse that opened rail access to Manhattan and anchors the surrounding arts district. The Grove Street PATH station is three blocks away.
The façade is divided into two story segments by thin white panels, with large multi-paned windows set against grey bricks laid in rusticated fashion. A skylit entrance canopy in wood and blackened steel leads to a 22 foot tall lobby finished in walnut cladding and concrete wall panels with blackened steel accents.
The rooftop holds an outdoor swimming pool, entertainment rooms with a fireplace, and a lounge with a kitchen. Inside, there is a residents' lounge, library and business center, skylit children's playroom, fitness center, and a complimentary coffee and tea stand. On-site parking includes electric vehicle charging stations, and the building has bicycle storage, cold storage, pet grooming services, and an art gallery on every floor. A 24 hour concierge staffs the lobby, and the building is pet friendly.
Apartments have 9 foot ceilings, wide plank brushed white oak floors, and in-unit washer/dryer hookups, with individual room control for heat and air conditioning. Select apartments have private terraces or balconies. Kitchens are outfitted with Italian Pedini cabinetry and appliances from Bosch, Miele, and Bertazzoni.
