The Black & Whites is a 1894 co op of four nearly identical five story walk ups at 527, 531, 535, and 541 East 72nd Street. Its black painted brick, white trimmed windows, fire escapes, and bright red entrance doors give the townhouse style complex a distinctive appearance. Set at the cul de sac end of the block, it faces the East River and two small parks, including one with river views and another with seating and a waterfall.

Apartments retain a range of pre war details, including high ceilings, hardwood floors, fireplaces, oversized windows, and exposures that bring in river, treetop, or park views. Windowed kitchens and bathrooms recur across the homes, while layouts include traditional one bedroom apartments as well as larger duplexes and floor through residences. One especially unusual arrangement places the principal living areas on one level with bedrooms above, a configuration that differs from the more typical walk up layouts.

The complex has resident storage, a shared laundry room, bike storage, an intercom, and a live in superintendent, along with a planted rear sitting area and private garden. Pets are permitted with board approval, and pied à terre use is allowed. The co op is opposite the rear plaza of One East River Place and at the opposite end of the block from Sotheby’s, with several hospitals along York Avenue to the south.

The 72nd Street station on Second Avenue serves the Q train, while York Avenue has crosstown bus service. The surrounding Upper East Side has changed substantially since Sotheby’s moved to the area, with luxury towers now alongside the older low rise buildings and parks that define this stretch of East 72nd Street.
