The Chambord is a 22 story, 39 residence condominium completed in 1987 at 350 East 72nd Street in Lenox Hill. Designed by Costas Kondylis of Philip Birnbaum Associates, the red brick building is set back behind a plaza and rises from a two story limestone base. Round oculi frame the entrance, while arched windows mark the fourth floor and a large double-height arch crowns the façade. The building occupies the former site of the neighborhood Trans Lux movie theater.
The typical residential floor is arranged with two apartments, and recurring floor through plans place living spaces along the north exposure and bedrooms to the south, connected by a center gallery. Approximately nine foot ceilings, broad windows, Juliet balconies, windowed kitchens and in-unit laundry recur in these layouts. Dining areas are often adaptable as offices or additional bedrooms, while several primary suites incorporate enclosed sunrooms or winter gardens. A full floor residence demonstrates how the standard two apartment plan can be combined into a single home while retaining the building’s north and south orientation.
The Chambord has a 24 hour doorman, concierge, resident storage and a bicycle room, and pets are permitted. The building is between First and Second Avenues, with the Q train stopping at the 72nd Street station on Second Avenue.
