Dorchester Towers, 155 West 68th Street: Review and Ratings

between Broadway & Amsterdam Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 155 West 68th Street by Carter Horsley

This huge, white-brick condominium  apartment building is known as the Dorchester Towers and it occupies a full block between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue and 68th and 69th streets.

It was erected by Paul and Seymour Milstein and designed by S. J. Kessler & Sons.

When completed in 1964, it had 683 apartments, making it one of the city’s largest apartments at the time.

It was the first privately developed “upscale apartment building erected in the area after the construction of Lincoln Center had sent property values soaring,” Robert A. M. Stern, Thomas Mellins and David Fishman wrote in their very impressive book, “New York 1960, Architecture and Urbanism Between World War II and the Bicentennial.”

The book also notes that “Distinguished not by its overall design quality but by its setback massing along Broadway, which reflecting the lingering effects of pre-1961 zoning ordinances, the building also had the somewhat dubious distinction of being the first white-glazed brick apartment building constructed on the Upper West Side.”

Given the “whiteness” of Lincoln Center, however, that “dubious distinction” has actually aged rather well and is not unattractive although it building’s massiveness is hard to ignore despite its many setbacks and angles.

It was also the first major project in the area for Seymour and Paul Milstein, the developers who went on to building One Lincoln Plaza and 30 Lincoln Plaza, major towers with better locations directly across from the center, a few years later.

This development is also known as 181 Amsterdam Avenue and 2001 Broadway.

Bottom Line
