The top of the 47-story, mixed-use building known as The Capri at 235 East 55th Street was built as condominium residences when the building opened in 2003 but the units were rented out by the developer, Arun Bhatia, until now.
Of 40 apartments, 22 have been vacated and completely renovated and are available for purchase as condominiums and the remaining 18 now occupied by renters are expected to become available later this year.
The apartments are on the 33rd through the 47th floors and there are only three apartments a floor.
The lower 32 floors are a dormitory for Marymount Manhattan College and now Mr. Bhatia has hired The Marketing Directors Inc. to market the apartments.
Apartments range in size from 651 to 1,930 square feet and the floor-to-ceiling windows have Crema Marfil marble sills, and the kitchens have Subzero and Miele appliances, Cashmere gold granite counters, and aluminum and glass cabinetry. Crema Marfil master baths have Neptune soaking tubs and glass-enclosed showers. The building has a 24-hour doorman and prices range from about $855,000 to $3,400,000.
The building was designed by Costas Kondylis.
Mr. Bhatia's other projects include the attractive, 41-story Strand on the southwest corner of 43rd Street and Tenth Avenue, which was built in 1989 and designed by Philip Birnbaum & Associates, the handsome, 28-story Dunhill, which was built in 1985 and designed by Liebman & Liebman Architects.
Manhattan Manhattan College is located at 221 East 71st Street.
The mid-block building is located between Third and Second Avenues.
