After years of planning, TF Cornerstone officially broke ground on the newest phase of Hunters Point South, which will bring nearly 1,200 new residential units to the neighborhood. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan were in attendance with representatives of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), NYC Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Selfhelp Community Services for the ceremony.
The new project will bring 1,194 studio through two-bedroom residential units spanning two buildings. The design is by ODA, and SLCE is the architect of record. Further details and amenities are not yet available, but sixty percent of apartments will be permanently affordable for low-, moderate-, and middle-income households. Also, 100 units have been set aside for low-income senior citizens. Selfhelp Community Services, one of New York’s largest and most respected senior service agencies, will be on-site to provide support services for the senior units.
In addition to the affordable apartments, the project will also see a new, 8,000-square-foot community center. By day, Sunnyside Community Services will use it to train home healthcare aides. By night and on weekends, TF Cornerstone will offer the space to the community for arts, wellness, youth, educational, and civic engagement programming. Selfhelp Community Services will also put on senior-focused programming here.

Other offerings include more than 8,900 square feet of retail space, 150 parking places, and a new 572-seat K-8 school. The project will be anchored by a 22,000-square-foot public green space designed by Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects.

“Through tremendous vision and hard work, these thirty vacant acres of public land gave rise to a dynamic new neighborhood featuring beautiful parkland anchored in affordability” – Eric Enderlin, Acting Commissioner, HPD

The groundbreaking marks the latest phase for the transformation of Hunters Point South. The first phase of development brought more than 900 new affordable units to the area through Hunters Point South Commons and Hunters Point South Crossing, buildings that opened in 2015. The second phase, an extension of Hunters Point South Park, opened to the public last summer.
