Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has been all over the current events, business, and gossip pages over the past several weeks. Most recently, he has made real estate news with his purchase of a full-floor home at The Hampshire House for $32,500,000, or $5.2 million above the last listed price when it came on the market this past winter and entered contract a few short weeks later. The Real Deal notes that Mr. Murdoch paid the high price to win a bidding war over the apartment, and that the sale comes months after he took a loss on a full-floor Flatiron District apartment in October 2022. (His downtown triplex penthouse remains on the market for $46,000,000.)

Mr. Murdoch is the latest luminary to own this Central Park-facing home with seven bedrooms, five and a half baths, 6,500 interior square feet, and a massive private terrace overlooking Central Park. It was sold by the estate of hedge fund powerhouse Julian H. Robertson Jr. following his death in August 2022. Mr. Robertson purchased it from Alice Tully, the opera singer/philanthropist who has been honored by having the chamber music hall at Lincoln Center named for her.

Downtown, The Cortland recorded a total of $40,259,500 between two closed sales over the past week. The top condo sale was for #22AW, a five-bedroom, 4,091-square-foot home that sold for $23,504,750, or slightly above the last asking price of $23,500,000. It was trailed by #22BW, which closed for $16,754,750, also a small fraction above ask. The buyers of both units were identified through two separate LLCs.
The past week's top condo sale outside The Cortland and fourth-highest overall was a duplex townhouse unit with a private garden at 109 East 79th Street that sold for $16,100,000, or $1.4 million below the last asking price of $17,500,000. The recorded sale comes months after two penthouses in the building led Manhattan's top sales, and at a time when there are no publicly listed availabilities in the highly successful Upper East Side boutique building.

Once in a lifetime does the most remarkable home come to the market. This is one of those, from its provenance to its breadth of over 100 feet precisely centered over Central Park with west and east windows at each end. Few buildings accommodate a full floor apartment comprised of approximately 6,500 square feet of interior space.

No other home on Central Park offers a 38’ x 20’ living room with 18’ 3" ceilings and three arched doors, each soaring over 15’ high, and opening onto the terrace and the park. This is a perfect home that combines oversized windows with views, and still has walls to accommodate a great art collection or over scaled art work.

The entry gallery, with its own view of the park, is a hint of the glorious rooms it opens onto, a perfect space connecting the formal dining room and grand living room. Beyond the living room is a room originally designed to be the home’s library, at 28’x19’, three oversized windows and a fireplace, it is currently the primary bedroom and sitting area. There is a spacious dressing room, en-suite bath with separate shower, and soaking tub. There is direct and access to a secondary bedroom currently set up as a home gym. In addition to the primary suite and gym, there are five secondary bedrooms, each generously sized, most with en-suite bathrooms in addition to two powder rooms, all with open southern exposures and full of sunlight.
