Not to be diminished like the art districts of Soho and the Plaza District, West Chelsea’s gallery district is suddenly teeming with new gallery announcements. Cementing its place as Manhattan’s epicenter of art, fashion and design, the neighborhood is set to receive 15 new galleries from developer-supremes, Related Companies; 4 art galleries and a museum within the ground floor of a new condo at 500 West 21st Street; and 2 double-height art spaces within a Peter Marino-designed condo called the Getty.
Now, the long-time home of the renowned Pace Gallery at 540 West 25th Street is being redeveloped into an eight-floor stack of galleries, offices, event spaces, and private viewing rooms. Pace will occupy half of the 80,000-square-foot building and will be developed by Weinberg Properties, who have published a new set of renderings of the under-construction building on their website. Bonetti/Kozerski Studio are the designers.

Lower floors will be characterized by a rain-screen system with lava stone cladding, featuring a custom pattern in recycled glass powder. The building’s top two floors will be suspended above a terrace/event-exhibition space that will offer sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. Per the developer, "The building fits into the historical Chelsea context but aims to bridge the gap from a traditional art gallery to a more open and accessible model of art display and engagement."
Excavation at the site is ongoing and delivery is expected fall 2017. Long live Chelsea's gallery district.
