When the beloved Cheyanne Diner, a classic railcar-style Western and Native American-themed restaurant that operated for nearly 70 years at the corner of 33rd Street and Ninth Avenue, was evicted in 2008, the structure went through an extensive relocation campaign before finally being moved to Alabama in 2009. Its corner lot sat fallow for several years after a permit was filled for a new residential building in 2007, at the onset of the economic downturn. The new development, addressed at 411 Ninth Avenue , is expected to open in late 2017 under the name 'Skylight House'.
Now having just topped off, the 7-story high building will hold 1,395 square feet of commercial retail space on its ground floor, with the remaining 6 floors expected to be apartments with an average of two units on each floor. The 12 apartments will measure under 1,000 square feet each and will likely be rentals.
George Papaioannou's 411 9th Ave Realty LLC are the developers and HTO Architect are the designers. The building's exterior is finished with a conventional grey brick with large expanses of windows. The site is less than 20 feet wide, lending for shallow, light-filled apartments. The building is topped by a periscope-like rooftop bulkhead that cantilevers angles outward to capture views down West 33rd Street.
411 Ninth Avenue will be joining a rash of other major developments springing up in the Far West Side - Penn Station neighborhoods. The massive mixed-use complex of Manhattan West is rising across 33rd Street and one block to the west is Related Companies' Hudson Yards master plan. Madison Square Garden and Penn Station are also one block west of the development.
