A contemporary yet complementary design for a new condominium by Kane Architecture & Urban Design has been revealed for 514 Halsey Street in the wake of unanimous Landmarks Preservation Commission approval. The lot in the Bedford Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District has stood vacant ever since the neo-Grec-style townhouse previously there was demolished in the 1960s. A previously submitted design towered over its neighbors and was called "grossly out of scale"; no action was taken by Landmarks.
The new red brick building is at the same level as surrounding buildings. It is topped with a black metal cornice similar but not identical to its neighbors. A Landmarks presentation goes into detail on the proposed materials for the facade, finishes, and fence railings and hardware, showing how these fit into the neighborhood. No new details about the apartments are available, but floor plans reveal that two of the three units will be duplexes.
