Mayoral candidates Ray McGuire and Shaun Donovan were all over the headlines recently, but not for the reasons they might have hoped: Both men vastly underestimated the cost of buying a home in Brooklyn. Mr. McGuire guessed that the median sales price in Brooklyn was $100K, while Mr. Donovan’s guess was $80K to $90K. According to appraiser Jonathan Miller, that might have been true 40 years ago - he told Crain’s New York Business that the last time the Brooklyn median price was $100,000 was the early 1980s.

Fellow candidate Maya Wiley guessed $1.8 million was the median price of a Brooklyn home; when provided with the overall median price of $900K for homes of all types, she said, “In some neighborhoods, it’s a lot higher.” Perhaps Ms. Wiley was thinking in terms of condos instead of co-ops - condos are typically priced higher than co-ops, and a look at condo prices alone puts Brooklyn at a median price of $1.15 million, or $1,118 per square foot (figures per CityRealty data).
