In the early days of New York City apartment living, bathtubs often appeared in the most unexpected place: the kitchen. As David Favolaro of the Tenement Museum explains, this once-common arrangement grew out of necessity. The 1901 Tenement Housing Act required sinks and bathtubs in every apartment, and kitchens were often the only rooms with existing plumbing and enough space to accommodate them. While these kitchen tubs have since become the stuff of urban legend, they still surface in a handful of unrenovated units across the city.

More than a century later, the bathtub has undergone a dramatic evolution. In much of today’s high-end offerings, primary baths increasingly favor expansive walk-in showers, with traditional shower and tub combinations relegated to secondary bathrooms. Yet for buyers who prioritize ritual and retreat, the soaking tub remains nonnegotiable. Deep, freestanding tubs crafted from stone, resin, or sculptural porcelain have become design statements in their own right, paired with refined fixtures and positioned to take full advantage of the city beyond the glass.

In the city's most luxurious residences, the bath itself becomes a vantage point. Framed by awe-inspiring skyline and river views, these tubs can offer a sense of calm and separation from the city below. Many are perched so high above street level that privacy is all but guaranteed, allowing for uninterrupted immersion and a very serene experience.
