David Favolaro from the Tenement Museum explains that this trend emerged from a mix of factors, including the 1901 Tenement Housing Act mandating sinks and bathtubs in all apartments, limited space elsewhere in the unit, and the convenience of existing plumbing in kitchens. Fast forward more than a century later, and these kitchen bathtubs have become almost legendary, though they do exist in some unrenovated units.

In new high-end construction, some designers have replaced bathtubs with luxurious showers in primary baths, reserving shower/tub combos for secondary baths. However, many who can afford to do so, value the tranquil ambiance provided by deep, free-standing soaking tubs.
