Statistics have shown that triple-mint, turn-key apartments are going fast in New York, while homes in need of work tend to linger on the market. It's true that renovating an apartment is a daunting endeavor at the best of times, and supply chain woes and labor shortages have made it especially challenging in recent times. However, months of lockdown have had people working, learning, relaxing, and exercising from home; in doing so, they have been forced to adapt their apartments to accommodate the various activities. A renovation can serve as a golden opportunity to carve out designated space as opposed to cramming oneself into the kitchen or a bedroom corner.

Of the 348 listings that experienced price reductions last week, a number of them were apartments in prewar buildings with generous square footage and original architectural details, but outdated infrastructure and/or interiors. They truly don't make them like they used to, and these diamonds in the rough have the potential to become true gems in the hands of a creative owner and a good architect.
