For the architecture and design communities, spring 2024 began with sad news: Jeffrey Beers, founder and CEO of architecture firm Jeffrey Beers International, died of cancer at age 67.

While studying architecture at Rhode Island School of Design, Mr. Beers studied glass blowing under artist Dale Chihuly, a skill that would influence his designs in the years to come. He studied under architect Oscar Niemeyer in Brazil as a Fulbright scholar, and came back to New York to work for I.M. Pei. In 1986, he founded his eponymous firm.

“I wanted to be respectful of the building and design the interiors in a way that conveys warmth, like I would my own home” – Jeffrey Beers on 277 Fifth Avenue

Jeffrey Beers International has designs all over the world, and has made its mark on New York. The new home of Cafe Boulud, run by celebrated chef and Mr. Beers' longtime friend Daniel Boulud, opened in December 2023; other restaurant and hospitality credits include Ascent Lounge and Porter House Bar and Grill in Columbus Circle, BondST Hudson Yards, and Hard Rock Hotel. He has also created the interiors and amenities of some of New York's most beautiful residential buildings, and we look at them below.

During the conversion of the former New York Telephone Company headquarters to a condominium, it wasn’t just the Art Deco exterior that had to be painstakingly restored: The lobby is an interior Landmark and had to be treated with care. Jeffrey Beers International created three distinct spaces – the Grand Lobby, the Arrival Lobby, and the Elevator Lobby – that respectfully combined new furniture and artwork with Ralph Walker’s original masterpieces.

Over 100 years after it was constructed as the New York Life Insurance Company headquarters, 108 Leonard Street’s exterior was restored to its original glory while Jeffrey Beers International transformed the interiors into luxurious condominiums with bespoke kitchens and proportions and details nodding to its history. Indeed, the marriage of contemporary touches with classic details can be seen throughout the building, from the dramatic entrance lobby to the rooftop sun deck.

277 Fifth Avenue was a key part of NoMad’s residential renaissance, standing as Fifth Avenue’s tallest residential tower until the nearby 262 Fifth Avenue outstripped it. One thing that has not changed, though, is the beautiful interiors by Jeffrey Beers International, designed to make the most of jaw-dropping city views and incorporate sumptuous materials. Mr. Beers took this a bit further – not only did he design the building’s amenities along with the interiors, but he and his wife bought an apartment in the building in March 2019 after becoming empty nesters.

One57 is widely considered the standard bearer for Billionaires’ Row, and it starts with the lobby designed by Jeffrey Beers International. Rich materials and custom art set the tone for the apartments and amenities on top. The firm also designed a model unit on the 61st floor; it was listed for $29 million and ultimately sold for $23.5 million.

One West End was an early entrant in the Upper West Side’s waterfront condo boom, and the amenity package was a key role in its success. Jeffrey Beers International drew on its extensive hospitality experience to create over 35,000 square feet of amenities that gave the condominium the atmosphere of a resort. They also designed interiors that would not compete with stunning river views, but create an open, airy atmosphere that complements them.
