The rumors are true: Extell Development Company has officially partnered with SMI USA, the United States subsidiary of Shanghai Municipal Investment, in a joint venture to develop the to-be tallest mixed-use residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Dubbed Central Park Tower, it will stand at 225 West 57th Street on Billionaire’s Row in Midtown. The skyscraper will soar 1,550 feet in the air, and cost a hefty $3 billion.
Both companies have tall track records: Extell garnered fame with its record-setting luxury condominium development, One57, which towers at 1,005 feet above street level in Midtown. SMI reigns as the developer of the world’s second tallest building, the Shanghai Tower, which topped out at 2,073 feet. The Shanghai Tower is only the second to surpass the 2,000 foot barrier, a feat it shares only with the Burj Khalifa, which currently holds the title of the tallest building in the world at 2,722 feet.

Central Park Tower has received an esteemed designer as well: Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, a firm founded on the principles of integrated architectural design, interior layouts, and structural efficiency. The firm already has some impressive heights under its belt; it designed the Burj Khalifa, as well as the to-be-tallest building in the world, the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia. Also known as the Jeddah Tower, this skyscraper will truly scrape the sky: upon expected completion in 2020, it will top out at a staggering 3,280 feet, more than double the height of the Central Park Tower.
Nordstrom will host its flagship store at the base of Central Park Tower.
Though seeming quite short in that context, Central Park Tower will indeed reign as the tallest building in NYC, offering unprecedented views of the city and beyond. At its base, it will host Nordstrom’s flagship store at what will be the retailer’s first full-line New York location. The store will span 363,000 square feet across four properties on Broadway. Above, the tower will host 180 apartments across its 99 floors. Both the store and the tower are slated for completion in 2019, and sales are set to launch later this year.
