Another crane has risen in Hudson Yards. This one hangs over the northeast corner of West 30th Street and Eleventh Avenue adjacent to the final leg of The High Line. Over the next year or so, the crane will ascend nearly 1,000 feet above the Manhattan skyline to build new residential high-rise 15 Hudson Yards. After more than a year of excavation and concrete pouring, the construction crew has finally wrapped-up the cavernous foundation. Now, the project will proceed on a slow and steady climb to 910 feet in the air.
The 88-story building is being designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), Rockwell Group, and Ismael Leyva Architects. The tower’s rendered appearance has won itself the nickname “Morph Tower” and upon completion is expected to cover 960,000 square feet in area, and house 391condo and rental units across 70 floors. It is distinguished by a curvy tapered form and maintains a supple glass exterior. At its midsection, the tower will morph into a shape that DS+R dubs a “quatre leaf,” which will aid in providing residents panoramic views of the city.

The tower is being pushed skyward by the Related Companies who have planned a city within a city upon their sprawling 28-acre site. The Hudson Yards master plan will span from Tenth Avenue to the West Side Highway between West 30th and West 34th street, and has become the largest private real estate development in our nation's history.
Inherent in the master plan is the ever-growing notion that no space should have a single purpose. 15 Hudson Yards is no different; the residential tower will shoulder a cultural arts center dubbed the "Culture Shed.” This innovative home for the creative industries will welcome local and international arts organizations spanning from visual art, design, media, and performance. The construction of the venue is already above ground, with its steel skeleton rising just behind 15 Hudson Yards' new crane. The 170,000 square-foot institution will feature a translucent retractable shell which allows the center to expand onto an adjacent plaza. Upon its projected completion in 2019, The Culture Shed is expected to host NY Fashion Week, the Tribeca Film Festival, and a myriad of art exhibits, Ted talks, and large product openings.
