Demolition has begun at the site of a new West Chelsea condo building slated to overlook the High Line. Located at 500 West 25th Street at the corner of Tenth Avenue, the new building is replacing a four-floor tenement and a one-floor car stereo store. Up until early 2016, the wall of the tenement building held a popular Eduardo Kobra mural that depicted a colorful remake of the Alfred Eisenstaedt photo V-J Day in Times Square.
The creative forces at GDS Development will be involved in developing and designing the new building. A rendering published by the project's financiers shows the building will be characterized by a simple grid of large windows set deeply within a facade of neutral-colored brick.

Permits for the new building were filed last year by GF55 Partners who are serving as the architects of record. The building will rise 10 stories, 125 feet tall and accommodate 9 full-floor apartments inside. There will be retail on the ground floor and condos above. The second-floor unit will feature a large terrace overlooking the High Line.
The new building will join two other recent condos on the blockfront: The Getty designed by Peter Marino and 245 Tenth Avenue designed by Della Valle Bernheimer. According to our index of High Line condos, closing prices have fallen back to earth in recent months. The prior surge was mostly due to the record closings coming in for the Norman Foster-designed 551W21.
