Overview of 121 Madison Avenue

121 Madison Avenue is a 13 story pre-war rental at the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and 30th Street, with records dating it to 1895. Designed by Philip G. Hubert and James W. Pirrson in collaboration with Jared Flagg, it was conceived as an early cooperative apartment house and originally organized with five duplex residences over each pair of floors.

The property became a rental in 1917, and a major renovation around 1940 removed balconies and much of the exterior ornament while replacing the original interiors with smaller apartments. The building now contains 127 residences. Early occupants included banker William H. Harriman, lawyer Grosvenor Lowery, and Yale & Towne Lock Company cofounder Henry Towne.

Apartments range from studios to four bedroom layouts, including many flexible configurations. High ceilings and hardwood floors recur, as do decorative fireplaces, generous living rooms, and open or separate kitchens; several residences have terraces or balconies, while upper floor exposures include Empire State Building views. The building has a full time doorman, concierge, resident storage, a mail room, laundry facilities, and a live-in superintendent, and pets are allowed.
