640 West End Avenue is a 1913 pre-war condominium designed by Ralph S. Townsend, who also owned the building and later lived there. The 12 story structure occupies the northeast corner of West End Avenue and West 91st Street, with a gray brick façade, three story rusticated limestone base, broad limestone window reveals, projecting balconies and a copper cornice. Polished granite columns and a broken pediment frame the side street entrance, while ivy covers much of the lower façade. Originally an apartment house, it was converted to a condominium in 1989 and contains 37 residences; its exterior also appeared in Seinfeld as the home of Elaine Benes’s employer, Mr. Pitt.
Apartments commonly have ceilings around 10 feet, oversized windows and broad room proportions. Larger plans often retain long entrance galleries, separate living and dining rooms, and former staff rooms adapted as offices or guest rooms; windowed kitchens and baths also recur. Original pocket doors, carved wood paneling, plaster ceiling work and built ins remain in many homes. Multiple exposures are typical of corner layouts, Hudson glimpses occur on upper floors, and in-unit washer dryers are permitted with approval.
The building has an attended lobby with doorman service, a live-in superintendent, a laundry room, bicycle storage and resident storage; pets are permitted. Riverside Park is one block west, while Broadway is one avenue east. The 1, 2 and 3 trains stop at 96th Street and Broadway, five blocks north and one avenue east.
