Review of 284 Lafayette Street by Carter Horsley

This impressive, 6-story residential co-operative building at 284 Lafayette Street on the southwest corner of Jersey Street across from the Puck Building in SoHo was converted from a loft warehouse.

The building, which is also known as 2 Jersey Street and 115 Crosby Street, was erected in 1891-2 and designed by John Rochester Thomas whose other major projects in New York were the Surrogates Court on Chambers Street and the Squadron Armory on Madison Avenue on the northeast corner at 94th Street.

This building has 20 large apartments and ground floor retail spaces.

Bottom Line

One of the handsomest buildings on Lafayette Street in SoHo, this robust building has large loft apartments and a prime location that is convenient to many boutiques, restaurants and public transportation.

Description

The red-brick building has seven 3-window bays above a broad arched retail space on the ground floor and under a nice cornice.

The building has frontage on Lafayette, Jersey and Mercer Streets and is close to a subway stop and a gas station, but also across Lafayette Street from the great Puck Building, one of Lower Manhattan’s major landmarks.

The ground floor is clad in limestone and the second floor is banded in limestone.

It has no entrance canopy or marquee and no sidewalk landscaping. It has protruding air-conditioners and a bandcourse above the fifth floor.

Amenities

The building, which is within the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District, has a nice lobby and an elevator.

It is pet friendly.
