Carter's Review

This attractive, 12-story, red-brick apartment building at 2575 Palisade Avenue between Independence Avenue and Kappock Street in the Spuyten Duyvil section of the Bronx was erected in 1958 and has 143 co-operative apartments.

It is known as the Riveredge and commands great hilltop views of the Palisades across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

It is not far from the Spuyten Duyvil Hudson Line station of the Metro North railroad along the Harlem River and across from Manhattan.  The commute to Grand Central Terminal is about half an hour.

Spuyten Duyvil (pronounced  SPY-ten DYE-vil) is the hilly area set at the point where the Hudson and Harlem Rivers merge. It is south of Riverdale and east of Kingsbridge.

A monthly ticket cost $193, according to an article in The New York Times September 3, 2013 by Vera Haller.  She noted that "To get to the station, residents walk down a steep hill along Edsall Street or take a flight of stairs," adding that "Metro-North also operates a bus service to area buildings in time to meet trains."

"Another commuting option," she continued, "is the BxM2 express bus, which stops at Kappock Street and Johnson Avenue and takes about an hour to get to the Herald Square area. The closest subway stop, at 231st Street and Broadway on the No. 1 line, is a 15- to 20-minute walk, or a short bus ride."

According to Ms. Haller, Spuyten Duyvil, which roughly translates from the Dutch as “in spite of the Devil” or “spitting Devil,” according to the New York Public Library, is believed to refer to the strong currents that occur where the two rivers meet.

This building is very similar in design to The Blue Building at 2400 Johnson Avenue nearby except for the color of their façades and the design of porte corcheres.

Bottom Line

A prominent slab tower with many balconies and large co-operative apartments on a hill overlooking the Hudson River and the Palisades in New Jersey.
