Built in 1888 for German wholesaler Max Ams, 399 Washington Street is a five story cast iron and brick loft building in the Tribeca Historic District. It was converted to residential use in 1988 and is now a small cooperative of full floor lofts, retaining the scale and material character of its original store and loft construction.
The residences generally measure about 1,675 to 1,800 square feet, with 10 foot ceilings, exposed brick, original wood or timber details, and layouts that accommodate one to three bedrooms along with offices, dens, or media rooms. The building’s most distinctive residence is a penthouse organized around approximately 1,000 square feet of private exterior space, including a landscaped roof terrace.

Interior designer Michael Bargo is associated with one of the renovated lofts. The building sits one block from Hudson River Park, including Piers 25 and 26, riverfront paths, playgrounds, sports facilities, a skatepark, and a dog run; pets and subletting are permitted with board approval.
