43 Clarkson Street: Review and Ratings

between Greenwich Street & Washington Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 43 Clarkson Street by Carter Horsley

This handsome, red-brick, 6-story building with deeply inset windows and strongly dentilated shallow cornice treatment at 43 Clarkson Street in the West Village is near the Hudson River and not far from Washington Square Park.

It was erected in 1900 and converted to condominium apartments in 2001.

It has only six large apartments.

In 1930, the building was known as the Sunset Warehouse and in 1952 it was known as the American Freight Lines Warehouse.

At one point, Julien Schnabel, the artist lived in the building and his wife, Olatz Schnabel, opened a linen store in the building in 1953.

Bottom Line

An elegant, red-brick, palazzo-like building, this is one of the more imposing older buildings in the West Village and its large apartments do not disappoint.

Description

Most of its fenestration is grouped into three-window configurations that with limestone accent.  Those on the fifth floor are arched.

There is a large set-back top floor.

Amenities

The building has a keyed elevator, a voice intercom and is pet-friendly.
