Sherman Square Studios is a 14 story, 148 apartment pre-war rental at 160 West 73rd Street, completed in 1929 as an artists’ studio building for painter and philosopher Walter Russell. Tillion & Tillion designed its neo Gothic exterior with a two story stone base, large multi paned windows, finial topped piers and arched eyebrow forms above the ninth floor windows.
The original plan called for extensive soundproofing, including double walls, soundproofed doors and intervening rooms between studios. It also specified a central cooking service and a ground floor secretarial room connected to each apartment by an electrical signal system, reflecting the building’s original organization around working artists and musicians.
The current apartment mix centers on studios and one bedroom homes, often with generous pre-war proportions; some living rooms measure about 20 by 20 feet. High ceilings and oversized windows recur in both layout types, while many apartments retain separate kitchens, hardwood floors and original architectural details alongside renovations.
The building has a 24 hour doorman, laundry facilities, an on-site superintendent and a pet friendly policy. Verdi Square and the 72nd Street station at Broadway, served by the 1, 2 and 3 trains, are around the corner, while Central Park is east along 73rd Street.
