The Willard is an 11 story rental building at 252 West 76th Street on the Upper West Side, originally completed in 1903 as a Beaux Arts residence. Its rental conversion and restoration, approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2016, retained the pre war structure while creating 52 updated apartments; the project architect was Steven Kratchman.
Designed by Ralph S. Townsend, the mid-block building has a three story rusticated limestone base, projecting bay windows framed by tall limestone piers, a red brick façade, and a mansard roof. The entrance is set above three steps beneath a balustraded balcony with four urns, while the restored lobby has a checkerboard floor, Doric columns, formal seating, and a secured package room.
Apartments range from one to four bedrooms and combine pre war details with renovated interiors. High and coffered ceilings, crown moldings, white oak floors, bay windows, central air conditioning, and in-unit washer/dryers recur across the residences, while kitchens have custom cabinetry, Caesarstone countertops, and stainless steel appliances. The building also includes a duplex layout with a private roof deck, an atypical arrangement within the collection.
The building has an attended lobby with a full time doorman, resident storage, a fitness center, children’s playroom, private business center with Wi Fi, bike storage, and a laundry room. It occupies a block between Broadway and West End Avenue in the Broadway Corridor, with Lincoln Center, Riverside Park, Central Park, museums, restaurants, and shopping spread across the surrounding Upper West Side.
